Exsel Pumps provides a pumping solution for thick rag-laden sewage sludge where two national pump rental companies failed.
After two national pump rental companies tried and failed, Exsel Pumps were recommended to the site as a solution provider. The requirement was to supply a pumping system for rag laden sewage sludge transfer from various holding tanks to feed tankers.
When initially scoping the project it was established that the sewage sludge was particularly rag laden and thick with a lower than normally required water content for pumping. There was a requirement to pump from two other tanks into a holding tank before another pump was used to pump to the tanker loading area. Another concern was the potential suction lift that could be at times 7.5 metres of this thick sewage sludge.
The solution was not just to supply and install equipment but to also train the operators on how best to utilise the equipment to pump such an arduous material and overcome the site conditions. Three Betsy 150 units were utilised and the operators were given training on the safe and most effective way of mixing and then pumping the sludge.
Installation was also hampered by access problems and Exsel utilised a truck mounted crane to assist. Risk assessments and method statements were provided to the site manager before commencing work and the solution was successfully provided in a safe manner.
This is another example of a number of raw sewage applications recently faced by Exsel and successful solutions provided. Being a specialist pump rental company investment is targeted at the right equipment and the right people. It is the specialist nature that differentiates Exsel Pumps from the more general pump rental companies.
